Step Right Up

Loose Canon has a strong commitment to giving students exciting and unexpected experiences of poetry as a living, breathing, dynamic artform.

We’re revisiting one of those programs with Step Right Up.

Taken from the title of a Tom Waits song, Step Right Up features poetry and lyrics from a wide range of modern and contemporary writers, singers and performers from Roger McGough to Roald Dahl to Tom Waits.

Presented as a series of sideshow acts, which feature song, dance, physical comedy and elements of circus, Step Right Up uses humour and abundant energy to present poetry in outlandish performance directions students will adore.

Drawing on many years of poetry performance for young people, we’ve created a 50 minute verse extravaganza, which will revolutionise the way students consider poetry, exciting and inspiring their interest in this oft maligned literary form.

In recent times there’s been a resurgence in poetry as a vehicle for live performance and this program reflects the urgency and vitality that abounds in poetry and lyrics today.

Step Right Up is action-packed poetry performed with unrivalled dynamism.
It’s a show which helps students see poetry as alive, dramatic and dynamic.

The experience of seeing a piece of verse performed in a highly comical, musical or physical way, is a groundbreaking one for many students whose attitude to poetry can change as a result.

So step right up!
